Parallel Universe Newspapers

The “July 4 2009 Special Edition” of The New York Times led me to consider an assignment I’ve never given students:

Imagine that you wake up tomorrow and the newspaper is filled with articles that reflect a changed world that reflects your hopes and ideals.  What would that paper look like?

Elementary students might just list headlines; middle schoolers might add ledes;  high school students might write several articles.

If you haven’t yet read the paper, enjoy.  I know you’ll get a special kick from the page 8 article:  “Congress Returns Civics to High School Curriculum:  Part of Broader Agenda to Restore United States Constitution.”
